Using a Clay Bar (Step-by-Step)

Items Needed for Claying a Car:

* Clay Bar (fine or medium grade)

* Clay Lubricant or Quick Detail Spray

* Clean microfiber towels

* Sandwich Bag

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Wash the Car First

* Thoroughly wash and rinse your car to remove loose dirt, bugs and grime. Clean car as best as possible in the wash stage. Claying a dirty surface can scratch the paint.

2. Break Clay Bar into smaller pieces

* The clay can be broken into manageable sizes for your hand and preservation of the clay.

* Work the clay and shape it into a flat palm-size disc

3. Spray Lubricant generously over a small area of the paint.

4. Gently Slide the Clay Over the Lubricated Area

* Rub back and forth in straight lines (with the air flow/not circles).

* The clay may grab, at first. Then it will loosen as it picks up contaminants.

* Once it slides smoothly, that area is clean.

Note:

For heavy contamination, multiple passes may be needed.

Wipe area and add fresh lubricated between passes.

After one or two sections or when the clay is visibly dirty, fold and knead it to expose a clean surface.

Depending on the goal, there will be one or two remaining steps: polish and/or protect. Protection is always the last step. However it can be preceded with polishing. After claying and/or paint correction, your car’s paint has no protection. It can be protected with a sealant or coating

Always use a clay bar with lubricant. Otherwise you’ll scratch the paint. If the clay is dropped on the ground, you should throw it away immediately. It can pick up particles that will scratch your car. For delicate or soft paint, use a fine-grade clay.

Over time the clay bar will fill with dirt and contaminants. At that point, it should be replaced with a new one. The amount of cars that can be done is not a set number. The amount of contamination the bar removes determines its life span.

Prepare Your Car for a Comfortable Road Trip

Imagine boarding an airplane with a dirty cabin. You would not be happy. Maybe not first class, you bought a ticket expecting a certain level of comfort on the flight. However, there should be no trash onboard. The seats, floors, and windows should be clean. An unclean cabin makes a long trip even longer.

With that in mind, you should take the same approach on a road trip. You should detail your car before hitting the road. You may ask, "The car will get dirty anyway. Why should I detail it?"

Comfort is the answer. Make the drive more comfortable for yourself and your family. A deep interior detail is not necessary. There is a level of cleaning that will benefit you and the vehicle.

Exterior

Wash the car, cleaning the wheels and tires. Be sure to thoroughly clean the glass. Remove any heavy film or sap. Wipe out the door jambs.

After washing and drying, add a wax of sealant. If you have time and the knowledge, you could clay the paint, removing embedded brake dust and dirt. However, a car wash will suffice for the situation.

The wax adds a sacrificial layer onto the paint. It helps repel bugs and other matter.

Interior

Remove all the things not needed for the trip. Remove all the useless crap stuffed in the door pockets. You know the stuff. Those areas become de facto trash bins.

Vacuum the carpets, under and between the seats. Remember to vacuum the trunk or cargo area. (Focus on the heavy stuff in those areas).

TESLA PAINT OVERSPRAY

Heavy Overspray Removal

The 2021 Model Y was a victim of severe paint overspray. The Tesla was covered top to bottom including paint, glass, wheels, It was parked in a lot near a building being painting. The overspray was so bad, the car owner could not see of the front windshield. The paint was removed so she could drive before the Model Y.

Paint

Glass

Cleaning the glass combined scrubbing, claying, and using a razor blade. Scrubbing with a pad and paint remover took away the most of the overspray. This was a bit messy. This paint had to stay wet so not to stain the glass. Claying removed paint traces left behind after scrubbing the glass. The razor blade was key for the tight corners. Combining the various steps was key in total overspray removal.

Trim

Of this all surfaces the plastic trim was challenging. The Tesla had texture, smooth and shiny (piano black). They all reacted differently. The Piano black was the most delicate and was not fully restored. Client was advised to replaced. However, the other two plastics cleaned well with a little patience. They required a paint remover that cut through the overspray. Afterwards, plastic trim remover was applied to every trim piece. This restored moisture and color.

Air Dream Edition - Self Healing Coating

What is that?! This response comes to mind upon first seeing the Lucid Air Dream Edition. It Lucid's first production car model.

Lucid Air's sleek luxury designs definitely grabs you. The front end makes you wondering about the headlights. Unlike the bulky "eyeballs", the headlights are seamless and narrow. They are low profile and unapparent. Moving up from the lights, the lighted emblem and hood design are nice touches. The hood vents look like manta ray gills. Going the impression the car cuts through the air. (A fitting car name)

Soon after receiving delivery, he wasted no time booking the detail appointment.

The exterior started with a deep cleansing wash. Paint and wheels were decontaminated. After claying, the Lucid's paint was lightly polish. Instead of a heavy paint correction, the enhancement polishing process removed minor blemishes introduce during delivery handling and washing.

On the interior, the leather sets and trim were lighted cleaned of dirt and body oils. The carpet and mats were vacuumed and cleaned of debris. The alcantara(suede-like material) dash and door trim received very light cleaning.

On the interior, the leather and carpet were treated with ceramic coating and fabric guard, respectively.

Washing and upkeep are a Dream for the Lucid Air. Dirt and debris come off the paint with very little effort. The coating preserves the new car look for years, with proper care.

Wash Off Pollen As Soon As Possible. Ensure to wash off the pollen with water either by yourself or through a car wash. While it may be tempting to brush off the pollen on your car hood, pollen is actually covered in spikes. When brushed off, these spikes can leave scratches in your paint.
Wax Your Car. Waxing your car not only enhances the look of your vehicle but also protects your car from pollen. After waxing, a protective layer will separate the pollen from your paint. The increased slickness of your exterior will also make it harder for pollen to stick. When it does, it’ll come off easier than before.
Windshield Water Repellent. You should take advantage of water repellents. The increased slickness will make it difficult for pollen to stick to your windows.

CERAMIC COATING CARE GUIDE

Ceramic Coating Care

Ceramic Coating has been applied to your vehicle's paint. It replaces a traditional wax providing a durable protection against UV rays and environmental elements. This guide helps you maintain the coating and enjoy the benefits.

Coating Cure time: 7-10 days

Avoid the following:

Washing the vehicle
Water exposure
Parking under trees

During the first week, immediately remove sap, bird droppings, water spots.

Note : The coating is soft so be gentle.

Vehicle Washing

Rinse starting from the top of vehicle. Gently apply soap across panel with wash mitt. Do not allow soap to dry on the panel. No need for scrubbing panel. Dirt and bugs should come off easily (Multiple passes may be needed for bugs).

Foam Cannon application may be used to applied soap.

Final Rinse

After washing entire vehicle, thoroughly rinse it removing all soap traces and check for missed areas.

Drying

Option 1 - Dry with an air blower. Remove water trace with lightly damped plush towel.

Option 2 - Damp two (2) quality microfiber towels and dry vehicle. Rub gently so towel will absorb water.

Topper

Only a silica dioxide protectant may be applied over the coating. This adds another protective layer. However it is not necessary.

Bugs & Tar

Remove as soon as possible. The best time is during the wash process. At other times, each of these should wipe off easily with a towel and detail spray.

Spray area with detail spray. Let sit for 10 seconds. spray microfiber towel. Wipe away bugs or tar. Flip towel and buff away streaks. Contact Red Clay Detailing if you are uncomfortable with this process.

Annual Maintenance

At least once a year, maintenance is required to uphold your coating warranty. This must be performed by Red Clay Detailing. This service checks the coating performance and removes contaminants from the surface. This will ensure peak gloss and protection.

Porsche 911T Targa Paint Correction and Coating

Ceramic Coating Upgrade

Initially, the Porsche 911T Targa was slated for a level 1 polishing and paint sealant. However it was being shipped to a new home that sits on a dirt road.

Although housed in a garage, a ceramic coating was applied after the paint correction for better protection and easier cleaning. The coating locks in the polished paint results for years to come. It also adds slickness and gloss.

Along with paint correction and coating, the 911T interior received a light dusting and vacuum. It’s vinyl top was protected with Raggtopp Vinyl Protectant.

Fair enough, you’re the tidy type who never brings food or trash into your car. Your car looks pretty clean, especially after it gets washed and vacuumed. However there are germs you can’t see.

Your feet have been on a journey. Think back to your last trip to your favorite restaurant, or even that quick pit stop at the local gas station. Throughout, the restaurant floor has food and drink spills that only received light cleaning. You made a run to the restroom. No need to explain what' happen in any restroom. 1986 BMW M6 FADED PAINT

The owner wanted to bring the 1986 BMW M6 paint back to life. It had sat under a car port for years. The paint certainty appeared as such.

After removing the scratches and water spots, the paint gloss was not at its best. It still needed further refining. One more step was needed: polishing.
